Ingredients
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 scraped vanilla bean (or 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract)
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons bourbon (or more, up to 3 tablespoons)
- 1/4 cup dark rum (or more, up to 1/2 cup)
- 1/16 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg (plus more for garnish)
- 1 cup heavy cream (cold)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, beat the egg yolk until it starts to thicken and turn pale yellow, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Gradually add sugar while continuing to beat until fully combined and the mixture forms a ribbon.
- Beat in vanilla bean or extract until well combined.
- Gradually mix in the milk, followed by the bourbon, rum, and nutmeg. Transfer to a large bowl.
- In a separate mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream until medium-soft peaks appear, adding a bit of sugar while beating.
- Gently fold the whipped cream into the egg mixture.
- Transfer to a storage container and refrigerate for at least several hours or up to a month to allow the flavors to mellow.
- When ready to serve, stir the egg nog, pour into glasses, sprinkle with nutmeg, and enjoy.
