Ingredients

  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 scraped vanilla bean (or 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon
  • 1/4 cup dark rum
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (cold)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the egg yolk until it thickens and becomes pale yellow.
  2. Gradually add the sugar while continuing to beat, until the mixture forms a ribbon.
  3. Mix in the vanilla bean or extract.
  4. Slowly add the milk while continuing to mix, then add the bourbon, rum, and nutmeg.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat the heavy cream until medium-soft peaks appear.
  6. Gently fold the whipped cream into the egg mixture.
  7. Transfer the mixture to a storage container and refrigerate for at least several hours or up to a month to allow the flavors to mellow.
  8. When ready to serve, stir the egg nog, pour into glasses, sprinkle with nutmeg, and enjoy.
